There are lots of travel agencies around us these days, if you are a frequent flyer, a businessman or just love to travel around the world then you must have used the services of some travel agency at some point. A travel agency is basically a retail business that offers products and services related to travel to their customers on behalf of suppliers, such as airlines, cruise lines, hotels, railways, car rentals, package holidays and sightseeing tours. They do offer specialized services for business travelers and commercial tours.

Travel agencies make profits by taking commissions from the suppliers whose products they sale. In case of air travel, they usually get discounted airline tickets from the airlines and sell them at the advertised price to their customers and thus the difference between the discounted price and the price at which they sell them to their customers is the profit or commission which a travel agency makes.

Here a question arises in our minds that why people go to travel agencies if they can get the services directly through the suppliers! The answer is that a travel agency do not simply retail the services offered by the suppliers but they do facilitate the whole process for their customers. Like they do all the work required to book a hotel room, to get a rental car for their customers on arriving at the airport etc. Some travel agencies also help their customers in visa processing and other legal documentation needed for traveling.

As internet is becoming common these days and with the general public having access to it, travel agencies are facing a great threat. Now a person with the access to the internet can easily book the tickets and hotel rooms online. Therefore airlines these days do prefer to sell their tickets directly to the customers instead of selling them through agents/travel agencies by giving them commissions. To counter this, several travel agencies have also started selling their products online and a customer can select from a wide range of travel packages offered by the agency.

As some suppliers have stopped giving commissions to these agencies and they prefer selling their products directly to customers, travel agencies are now charging processing fees from their customers to make profits. In return they are offering more attractive packages to their customers.

Travel management allows the traveler to manage their travel before start it.
